Data manipulation using spreadsheets and databases SL955 / RB01
Summary
During this course, you will get to grips with manipulating data using both spreadsheets and databases. You will build confidence and understanding in using a variety of formulae and functions, pivot tables, and data validation in spreadsheets. You will then turn your attention to setting up a database from scratch and explore how to build tables, queries, and forms.
The course will be hands-on, with opportunities to develop solutions to given problems. You'll be led by an expert Professional Development Leader who will share useful teaching resources, including referencing the Teach Computing Curriculum.
Who is it for?
This course is aimed at teachers delivering Computing at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, including Level 2 vocational qualifications.
What topics are covered?
- Fundamentals of spreadsheets – During this session, you will explore core spreadsheet skills, including formatting, data types, importing and editing data, basic formulae, and introductory functions.
- Developing your own spreadsheet – During this session, you will have the opportunity to build upon the skills learned in Session 1 by developing your own spreadsheet based on a given scenario.
- Advanced spreadsheets – This session will deepen your understanding of spreadsheets as you develop confidence with advanced features, including complex functions, data validation, error debugging, pivot tables, dashboards, and user interface tools.
- Introduction to databases – During this session, you will learn to set up database tables with appropriate fields and data types, import data, apply validation, define primary and foreign keys, and construct simple queries using logical operators.
- Presenting data from a database - Expand your skills by designing advanced queries with multiple tables and learn to create interactive forms and visually effective reports using database interface and presentation features.
- Building your own database – During this final session, you will have the opportunity to develop your own database, building upon all the skills you have learned throughout the course."
How will you learn?
This course is delivered virtually using MS Teams.
How long is this course?
This course lasts approximately 6.5 hours and is delivered across multiple sessions, which may take place on different dates and at various times.
Who is the course leader?

Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Apply a range of spreadsheet tools and techniques - including data validation, conditional formatting, functions, and pivot tables - to organise, analyse, and present data effectively.
- Evaluate and troubleshoot common spreadsheet errors, and construct interactive dashboards and user interfaces using advanced features such as macros, buttons, and forms to support teaching and learning.
- Design and construct relational databases by defining tables, setting data types, applying validation rules, and establishing primary and foreign key relationships.
- Develop and refine queries, forms, and reports.
