Would you like to develop your knowledge and skills in key molecular laboratory techniques, including DNA extraction, PCR and gel electrophoresis? These techniques can be used to expand learning opportunities for your students and develop their knowledge for CCEA GCE Biology, GCE Life and Health Sciences, and Level 3 OCR Cambridge Technicals in Applied Science.
In this course, you will firstly determine if you can taste bitterness using specialised paper strips. You will then examine your DNA for the presence of a gene that effects your ability to taste bitter foods using PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis. You will then compare your tasting phenotype to your genotype. After this experience, you will be able to extend the skills of your students by linking these practical skills to the curriculum, enhancing educational outcomes for pupils.

Describe the fundamental principles of PCR, including the role of DNA polymerase, primers and thermal cycling in amplifying specific DNA sequences.
Develop experience in setting up and conducting PCR experiments, including the preparation of reaction mixtures, programming thermal cyclers, and troubleshooting common issues.
Analyze and interpret PCR products using agarose gel electrophoresis, including the preparation and of agarose gels.
Explain how PCR can be used for genetic research, forensic science, medical diagnostics etc.
