Moments: Revision
This short activity can be used to monitor and assess understanding of moments. It could also be used as an extension or reinforcement activity at the end of a topic on moments or as a revision activity.
The resource contains teacher's notes and resources for a "sometimes, always, never" card sort.
Textbook
Mechanics in Action
Pages 80-87 of the pdf suggest a practical approach to gaining an understanding of moments involving metre rulers.
Handout 9 (pdf page 180) provides a starting point for the investigations. For further investigations some resources from the Leeds Mechanics in Action Kit or similar are needed.

Moments
This series of interactive excel sheets investigate models involving moments.
The first sheet helps students to investigate the moment of a force about a point. The components of the force can also be revealed.
Models on other sheets include light rods, a beam suspended by two strings and that of a man stood on top of a heavy beam with two supports.
In each case the parameters can be changed and results shown.
