Pig and other tales: a book of mathematical readings with questions and specimen answers

This is a book of mathematical readings which cover a wide range of topics accessible to students taking mathematics at A Level or Scottish Highers.
The readings cover a wide range of topics. The Pig, of the title, is an analysis of the probabilities associated with a simple game which uses two dice. Other titles include The Trouble with Asymptotes, Imagine the Roots of a Quadratic, How to Win the National Lottery and Mathematics and the Motion of the Human Body .

The readings have been chosen as comprehension tasks for students and each is accompanied by a set of questions together with detailed specimen answers. Some general advice on reading mathematical articles is also included. Since comprehension tasks are becoming a feature of assessment at this level, the book provides a valuable resource for the teacher in developing students' reading skills, besides stimulating an interest in a wealth of fascinating mathematical material.

This book is part of the Archive Collection which is available to view at the National STEM Learning Centre.
