Topic Books
The Young Scientist Investigates resources for students aged 8 to 11 years comprise two course books and 20 topic books. The course books provide information for children to read and activities for them to carry out relating to a series of topic-based units. Some activities can be completed through an understanding of the text and some require further, guided investigations. At the end of each unit there is a double-page spread giving further activities, questions to answer and a list of ‘what every young scientist should know’ about the topic. The topic books contain colourfully illustrated text for students to read. They give information on various sub-topics within the overall topics. The sub-topics are grouped into two blocks, each block being followed by work sections with questions on the text, things to do and simple experiments. There is a glossary at the end of each book.
The titles of the books are: Birds, Sea and seashore, Seeds and seedlings, Small garden animals, Trees, Water, Air, Rocks and soil, Electricity and magnetism, Light and colour, Heat, Energy, Sounds, Food, Structures, Everyday chemicals, Materials, Pond life, The human body and Flowers.
