Manufacturing 14 to 16

This book, produced by the Technology Enhancement Programme (TEP) includes six design challenges. These cover:

  • Engineering in miniature
  • Simple mouldings: design and manufacture of an injection moulded product
  • Designing and making a 'hi-tech' pen • Designing and making a desk top chronometer
  • Re-inventing the paper clip
  • Designing and making a modelling system

Each project is presented as a structured design and make task designed to occupy a nominal 5-10 hours of curriculum time. The projects provide basic information, calls for some investigation and demand that students make some fundamental design decisions. A range of study files include activities that help students to practise and understand manufacturing and processes that include:

  • How to identify a need
  • Producing a design checklist
  • Selecting a material
  • Processing and forming materials
  • Materials testing index
  • The Hotdot production line simulation
  • Quality and quality control
  • Quality control exercise
  • How to evaluate a product
  • Electroplating
