Structures 14 to 16
This book, produced by the Technology Enhancement Programme (TEP), helps students to consider the design of man-made structures. Data, mathematics, computer modelling and actual scale models are all used in deciding if a structure's final design will work. The book looks at structural principles and applies them to designing and making things. In broadly two sections, the book first challenges students to design and make a range of structures. These include:
- a shelving system
- a kite, using advanced materials
- frames in space
Students then move on to study and apply their understanding in a range of areas such as:
- tensile strength of materials
- measuring deflection in beams
- measuring forces in struts and ties
- designing a bath hoist
- investigating Hooke's Law
The book contains comprehensive information, student design briefs, activity sheets and is extensively illustrated.
