To a 'C' and Beyond
This resource from Teachers TV provides an insight into why the Mathematics Department of Oaks Park High School in Essex has been rated as outstanding by Ofsted.
Stephen Froggatt is Head of Mathematics at the school and, to inform students and monitor progress, an Assessment for Learning programme provides detailed tracking and targeting of every mathematics student. Results are broken down into individual strengths and weaknesses and are shared within the department as well as with parents, who are encouraged to review tests with their children.
To give students the best chance of achieving a grade C plus, the department introduces a booster programme for those students who are on the borderline of grade C/D. Students are offered extra tuition and revision classes to help them work towards a better grade and each student is given a personalised breakdown of how they have performed in their November examinations, together with a plan of how to address weak areas.
