Year Five/Six Autumn Term

This resource has been created for mixed age classes working at upper primary level to support the learning of place value, decimals and written addition. The detailed weekly plans contain differentiated activities for the two year groups, guided tasks and details of resources required for each lesson. Objectives covered in the lessons include:

Week One

Year 5

  • Understand place value in 5-digit numbers
  • Place 5-digit numbers on a landmarked line
  • Compare 5-digit numbers
  • Add and subtract 1s, 10s, 100s, 1000s and 10,000s
  • Use compact column addition to add pairs of 4-digit numbers and pairs of 5-digit numbers

Year 6

  • Understand place value in 6-digit numbers
  • Place 6-digit numbers on a line
  • Compare 6-digit numbers
  • Add and subtract 1s, 10s, 100s, 1000s, 10,000s and 100,000s
  • Use compact column addition to add pairs of 5-digit numbers

Week Two

Year 5

  • Understand place value in numbers with 2 decimal places, compare and order
  • Multiply and divide by 10 and 100 to give answers with 1 or 2 decimal places
  • Use compact column addition to add amounts of money, rounding to approximate

Year 6

  • Understand place value in numbers with 3 decimal places and compare, order and begin to round to the nearest whole, 0.1 or 0.01
  • Multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000 to give answers with 0, 1, 2 or 3 decimal places
  • Use compact column addition to add 2 or 3 amounts of money or numbers with 2 decimal places in a measures context, e.g. metres, rounding to approximate
