Volcanoes

This resource explores what volcanoes are and some of their key features. Students will learn why volcanoes erupt and the difference between effusive and explosive eruptions as well as understanding the effects magma viscosity can have on lava flows and eruptions by conducting experiments to test the impact of temperature, slope angle and crystal content on lava flow.

Students will also learn that volcanoes usually form at plate boundaries and use the Hawaiian hotspot to work out how fast the Pacific plate is moving. They will explore some of the reasons why people live near volcanoes and understand some of the natural hazards associated with volcanoes – lava flows, volcanic ash, volcanic gases, earthquakes recognising the ways in which geologists monitor volcanoes to predict eruptions.
