Parts of a plant and their functions - EAL

This resource helps pupils to label the various parts of a plant including flowers and use the correct vocabulary to describe the function of each part. Whilst designed to support pupils with additional needs in upper primary school it can also be used by pupils who need support in lower secondary school.

The diagrams of the plant and flower can be used to visually introduce the various parts of the plant and then add the appropriate key words to the labels. The labeling activity has differentiated versions available. These diagrams are then supported by matching activities for both the plant and flower where visual images are used to help pupils use the correct words to describe the function of the various parts. The use of correct language is then reinforced using a substitution table technique where pupils create sentences by selecting appropriate words from a series of columns.

The teacher guidance contains further information on how to support or challenge pupils on this topic using this resource.
