Positive and negative numbers

This unit from the Continuing Mathematics Project assumes that students have met and used directed numbers, but that their use has become rusty. The unit briefly justifies the rules by which the four operations (+, -, x and ÷) can be accurately carried out. In this sense the unit could be said to form an introduction to the topic.

The objectives of the unit accordingly are to enable students to:
(i) manipulate accurately directed numbers in mixed expressions involving the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
(ii) to substitute directed numbers into algebraic expressions and evaluate the result accurately.
(iii) It is also hoped that students will gain satisfaction from working the unit and from achieving success in a large number of simple examples.
